Europe Up, London Miners Weighed by China GDP Target

Caution seemed the order of the day across markets early on Monday as China set itself one of the lowest gross domestic product targets in many years, hinting to investors that the big reopening boom may not be as positive for the global economy as hoped. Beijing set a target of around 5% growth this year, creating a relatively low bar for the regime to clear.

Chomping on a Nothingburger Until Powell Pipes Up

Stocks across Europe were a touch softer after a sluggish start to trading on Tuesday, taking the cue from a pretty nothingburger of a session on Wall Street, but started to show some more positive momentum in the second half hour of the session with the major indices flipping into green – but not a huge conviction trade here.

Contagion Lurking

Contagion fears are not yet going away – bank shares are lower again this morning and weighing on broader sentiment. Yesterday we witnessed Deutsche Bank credit default swaps blow out and shares this morning are down 6%. UBS shares fell more than 7%.

UBS Calls Up Ermotti

It’s like calling back Fergie to manage Scotland. Ok it’s not, but I figured we need some analogy that references Scotland + football after last night’s heroics from Steve Clarke’s men. UBS shares rallied 2% to above 18CHF in early trade as the bank named ex-boss Sergio Ermotti as new CEO, taking over from Ralph Hamers on April 5th.

Indices trim March losses

European stocks rose tentatively in early trading on Thursday, trimming some of their losses for the month after a solid recovery for Wall Street underscored the more risk-on tone to this week. The FTSE 100 is about 1% higher for the week, whilst DAX and CAC trade up closer to 1.5%. The S&P 500 is 2% higher for the week after rising 1.42% yesterday to surmount the 4k level.
