Cambodia's Prime Minister announced Thursday that he has nominated former U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, lauding his "exceptional statesmanship" in halting a border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. In a social media post, the Prime Minister attached a letter he said he sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee. "This timely intervention averted a potentially devastating conflict, was crucial in preventing significant loss of life, and paved the way for peaceful resolution," the letter stated. Reuters reported that Trump called the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia on July 26, threatening that he would not conduct tariff negotiations unless the conflict ended. Ultimately, Trump brokered a ceasefire agreement negotiated in Malaysia on July 28, ending the latest and most intense round of fighting between the two neighboring countries. The two countries agreed Thursday to ensure no further hostilities and to allow Southeast Asian observers to enter. The five-day conflict left 43 people dead and displaced over 300,000. The conflict began with a small-scale shootout and quickly escalated to heavy artillery and rocket attacks, and hours later Thailand deployed F-16 fighter jets for airstrikes.
